My Purpose (a spoken word poem)

My Purpose
Written by: Kelly L. Hunter

As I sit in silence, my mind fills with wondering thoughts...
I can’t begin to understand or even process what life has shown me…
What is my purpose?
I have always known that I was meant to do something great, but what?
It’s so hard to focus…
When our children are starving, people are dying by the masses, disease, government scandal and social classes…
A world filled with so much greed and hate…
Children arming themselves and they’re not even eight…
The media day after day, night after night, filling our airways with fear and rage…
What kind of world will my son, your son, his son or her son, be living in, when they’re our age?
This world is still as racist as it was two-hundred years ago…
The only difference between then and now is, NOW we have a few more amendments than we did THEN…
And you want to question me about living in sin?
So what if I choose not to get married in a time where divorce seems to be more sacred than marriage…
At least I know how to love and can hold my head high, as I push my son’s carriage…
Don’t even get me started on George W. Liar…
Whose friends and family took my beautiful state of sunshine and set it a fire…
So we can “Rock the Vote”, we can “Choose or Lose”, but haven’t we already lost?
Lost millions of innocent people all over the globe, over weapons of mass destruction?
People, we are the weapons of mass destruction…
As long as we continue to turn a blind-eye to all those who are in need…
People are driving in their expensive cars, talking on their cell phones, listening to their satellite radios and singing a happier song…
While a single mother buses it two hours this way, two hours that way…
Working as many jobs as she can to make ends meat, because she can’t pay her rent or feed her children…
And let us not forget, if her child gets sick, not only will she have to miss work…
But she can’t afford the health care to make sure her child not only gets medicine, but gets better…
And you ask me what is wrong?
United Nations under One God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all?
Where is the justice when the murderer, rapist or molester walks free but the innocent are sentenced to die?
People, this could happen to you, it could happen to me…
That is why I have decided that it is no longer a time to sit and cry…
It is time to stand up and fight…
Fight for our right to have rights…
Fight for our right to finish the revolution to end political pollution…
This is my purpose…
What is yours?

One Love,
Kelly 10/11/04

This poem is dedicated to the many lives lost due to ignorance…
May we never forget…
